ROCKLAND, Maine — A Waldoboro man has been charged in connection with the theft of global positioning devices during car burglaries.

Adam Niemeyer, 21, of Waldoboro was arrested after being stopped by police for a motor vehicle defect at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Deputy Police Chief Wallace Tower said that officers Matthew Lindahl and Joel Neal stopped Niemeyer for defective brake lights. When they approached his car they noticed “four or five” GPS units in plain sight. The units were apparently stolen and individuals in the car cooperated with police during questioning, Tower said.

Maine State Police Trooper Pat Hood assisted with the investigation.

Niemeyer was charged with burglary of a motor vehicle and violation of conditions of release. He was taken to the Knox County Jail where bail was set at $1,200.

Tower said the investigation is continuing.

“At this point in time we have not determined how many vehicles and in what towns there may have been burglaries,” Tower said Tuesday. “Others may be involved and there could be additional charges.”

Tower said that anyone who discovers their vehicle was entered should contact Detective Christopher Young at the Rockland Police Department at 594-0316.
